NMA Data Shows Less than 50 per cent of Hospitals in Nigeria have Functional MR1, says Dr Izechukwu, PPC GM
Fewer than 50% of hospitals in Nigeria are equipped with functional MRI or CT scanners, according to Dr. Chukwunonso Izechukwu, Assistant General Manager of the Healthcare Division at PPC Limited. Citing recent data aligned with findings from the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and World Health Organization reports on Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure, Dr. Izechukwu noted that diagnostic gaps, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas, are a major obstacle to early disease detection and timely treatment across the country.
In response to this growing concern, PPC Limited is supporting a series of clinical meetings across Nigeria to promote direct engagement between healthcare providers and advanced diagnostic tools. The initiative will include hands-on demonstrations and knowledge-sharing sessions at key locations, including Covenant University Medical Centre, CIDAL Biomedical Limited, General Hospital Lagos, Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, and Habib Medical Centre, Abuja. These sessions will feature product presentations and expert-led discussions on advanced diagnostic and interventional technologies such as CT, MRI scanners, mammography units, Cathlabs, C-Arm, Ultrasound, as well as on point-of-care devices.
Speaking further, Dr. Izechukwu emphasized the urgency of expanding diagnostic capabilities across Nigeria’s healthcare system. “There are very few Nigerians who have access to functional MRI or CT scanners. Mammography services are even scarcer, especially in rural and semi-urban communities. These limitations are significant barriers to early diagnosis and effective treatment for diseases like cancer, cardiovascular conditions, and neurological disorders. Through these clinical meetings, PPC Limited is creating opportunities for healthcare providers to interact directly with life-saving technologies. Diagnostics remain the cornerstone of quality healthcare delivery, and without them, clinicians are forced to make decisions without adequate information,” Dr. Izechukwu added.
He added that the initiatives are also part of a broader strategy to support healthcare institutions with reliable diagnostic and interventional tools towards building a more resilient health system through investment in technology, training, and strategic partnerships.
PPC Limited has been instrumental in delivering healthcare infrastructure and medical solutions nationwide, working with both public and private institutions to bridge critical gaps in service delivery.
